3 January 1935 Banbury Guardian   and   Banbury Advertiser Funeral of Mr. John Henry Hiorns (b.1893) on 28 December 1934
John's Great Grandaughter Olivia Fenion (née Minnear) recounts "John sustained a WWI war injury on his lip. It never really healed and he would have flare ups of infection. At 41 years old, he died of septicemia. My mother, Mrs. Joyce Minnear, was only 7 years old when her father died. The funeral procession was the largest seen in Deddington in a long time."

People lined the streets and the article states upwards of 200 people followed the cortege. There were 34 Firemen present in their uniforms from Deddington, Brackley, Adderbury, Banbury, Aynho Park & Oxford City.

The Palbearers were from Deddington Brigade under the direction of its President, Brian Millington and Chief Officer, Stanley Hall. They were: J Callow, J Cox, C Austin and W Checkley.

19 March 1941  Bicester Advertiser A fire at Lady Denbigh's thatched house caused £1000 worth of damage
Ed's note: £41,500,000 in 2023 money
The fire threatened the neighboring cottages and the chapel. Clifton would look very different today if the fire had really taken hold.  Some of the occupants were very frightened evacuees who had left London to escape the blitz and its fires only to have to do so in Clifton.

24 April 1941  Banbury Advertiser Johnson's Timber Yard Fire
This may have been the most significant fire that Deddington Brigade has had to attend in the village in its history. Derek Robbins, who was a small boy at the time, gives his very full account HERE

11 March 1953 Banbury Advertiser The Old Fire Station is deemed unsuitable as a mortuary
During the war the old building on Goose Green - which had been where the fire engine was housed in the 1880s - was designated for use as an emergency mortuary. The Rural District Council (predecessor of today's local councils) considered this not a suitable use and a report as to possible future use would be made.[Ed's note: that report is not to hand]

19 August 1953 Banbury Advertise New Fire Station opened
Lord Macclesfield cut the tapes at new stations in Deddington and Hook Norton. The latter event occupies most of the article! George Busby was the Sub-Officer in charge. The present Station is on the same site but has been extended and added to since this photograph was taken in 1953.
