Alban Samman ran a successful trading business in the village and his son Henry ran a very successful shipping business. The article following (reproduced by courtesy of the Deddington News) summarises both their careers.
Alban and his wife Sarah lived at Laurel House on the SW corner of the Bull Ring. The story of its occupants - and a mystery discovered during removations in 2024 - written by its current owner, Mark Gandy, can be found HERE. They had a close relationship with the Chislett family.
Several references to Alban can be found in George Coggins Scrapbooks - c.f. the Index to Scrapbook No.2
Another article providing significantly more information about Henry's Steam Ship Company can be found HERE
Husband and wife are buried in Deddington Churchyard. Their grave No. 277 is on the east side of the church. Adjacent to it are graves 278 & 279 which also refer to the Samman family. Alban's friend and fellow tradesman, James Chislett, is buried in Grave 276. All these graves can be located close together on the map of the churchyard in area E near the wooden shed.
