The Story of Deddington Mary Vane Turner

In her book published in 1933, Mary  wrote, in some detail, about the Parish Registers and gave examples of things to be found in them.  One of the most curious group of items was the following:

December 1668 "Colected for the Redeming of the Slaves in Turkie - 5s. 2d."
May 15th 1670 "Colected for a Breife for to Redeem Slaves - 8s. 4d."
November 21st 1670 "Colected towards the Redeeming of our English from Slavery - £4 1s. 7d."

Piracy was rife on the seas around Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries. Barbary Corsairs, from what are now Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, sailed as far as Ireland in their search for booty, living or dead ! Follow this link for a detailed description of the little-known fate of around 10,000 Britons who were captured and made slaves.
