This advertisement was placed in a Banbury newspaper in 1912 according to a hand written note top right which also has the initials DJ & MA. It is reproduced courtesy of Mr & Mrs Stewart previous owners of Clydesdale.
The House of Education in Ambleside was founded in 1892 by Charlotte Mason. It taught a highly popular progressive form of education known as the Parents National Education Union (PNEU) and authorised trained teachers to open local Parent's Union Schools across the UK. In 1938 it changed its name to The Charlotte Mason College and now forms part of the University of Cumbria.
There is no record of a Mrs WG White in the 1911 census. The date on the copy of the advertisement appears to be 1912 (slight possibility of 1911) which would suggest that the school opened after April 1911 date of the census*. There is no other record of the school that has come to light nor does it figure in any of the extensive recollections of Deddington folk such as Sid Berry, Bernard Bowerman, George Harris, Don Walker or Jim Yerbury; so the school may have been short lived and closed in 1914 on the outbreak of WWI.
Mrs White must have been a tenant of the then owner Joseph painter, farmer of Nether Worton, because there is a complete record of owners.
*There is a slight conflict on dates because of the wording of the 1922 conveyance which says that the property is 'now known as Clydesdale'. By 'now' does it mean as of 1922 or since the last conveyance in 1870. Balance of facts is that it means since last conveyance in 1870.
