The 6th Oxfordshire Rifle Volunteer Corps
A citizen-soldier unit was formed in Deddington, Oxfordshire, in March 1860. It was raised as part of the broader Rifle Volunteer Movement, a wave of local militia groups established across Great Britain out of a widespread fear of a French invasion. While the University of Oxford raised its own separate volunteer units, the county of Oxfordshire formed multiple independent units. The 6th Corps was specifically established at Deddington.
In May 1860, the county's independent corps were unified under the 1st Oxfordshire Administrative Battalion, which established its headquarters in Oxford. The 6th Oxfordshire Rifle Volunteer Corps had a relatively short independent operational lifespan and was disbandment in 1870.
